The Haunted Basement is written by Oliver Wang. Oliver is ten years old.
A long time ago, a man trapped an evil monster in an abandoned school basement. He told his son to never go into the basement, because if the monster got out it would kill everyone. The man’s son promised that he would never let anyone in the basement.
Sixty years later, the man’s son built a new school on top of the haunted basement. When he hired new teachers, he told them, “Don’t go into the basement.”
Then one day, a new teacher decided to clean the basement. He wanted to use it for teaching students. People saw him going into the basement with a mop and he never came back out. Everyone thought he quit, but in reality the monster ate him.
One sunny afternoon, Jimmy and Tom stole the basement keys and decided to explore the mysterious basement. They decided to go back to the school at midnight. They opened the creaky, old door and looked around the dark, shadowy basement. There was an old piano and a lot of boxes. Suddenly, the door slammed shut and the piano started to play a scary tune. They thought it was the kind of piano that plays itself, but then they noticed a pair of green and bloody hands running swiftly over the keys all by themselves.
Suddenly, Tom screamed loudly, “AHHHHHH!” Then he disappeared as fast as a mouse running from a cat. Jimmy thought Tom was scaring him so he went home.
The next day, Tom didn’t come to school, so Jimmy decided to look for him. He went back to the basement all by himself.
He threw open the door and shouted, “Tom, where are you?”
He jumped down the stairs. As he walked further into the dark basement, he heard the piano playing in the gloomy dark. He felt a cold breeze on his body. Suddenly, he felt hundreds of hands pulling him into a big, old box.
He heard a boy sobbing quietly in the box. “Who’s there?” the boy asked quietly.
“It’s Jimmy. Who are you?”
The boy shouted, “It’s Tom!”
Jimmy was glad that Tom was alive. Suddenly, green slime started dripping into the box. Tom’s shoes accidentally touched the slime and his shoes melted right away. Just as the slime was eating their socks, a teacher opened the box and saved them.
The next day, Tom and Jimmy brought their flashlights and water guns to school and went back into the basement. As soon as the piano started playing they were grabbed and pulled into the box and the green slime started dripping again. Just as the slime was going to eat them, some water from Jimmy’s gun dripped on the slime and the slime disappeared.
They sprayed the disgusting green slime with water. Suddenly a slime monster appeared. It was ten feet tall and smelled like rotten cheese. It was as fat as an elephant and moved like a turtle. Its mouth was open wide enough to eat both of the boys. Tom and Jimmy were so scared they almost peed their pants.
They sprayed the monster again but they ran out of water. They jumped out of the box and ran up the stairs. The slimy green monster chased them to the soccer field. When the monster almost had them, it started to rain. The monster disappeared with one last howl. Tom and Jimmy had saved the school and the world.

Great story, Carrie. That’s one talented young man. If one of my students had written it I think the monster’s odor would have been described as being 外国人-like.
Great story. He’s a much better writer than me.
Wow, he’s only 10 years old. It’s brilliant. I would like to write at least as good as he. I cannot wait to see next story.
I know. It’s a great story. I was so impressed when he started telling me about it.
We were sitting in class one day (it’s a one-on-one class) and I asked him what kind of stories he likes to read. He told me he really liked scary stories. I asked him what he would write about if he wrote a scary story and this is what he told me on that first day. It took him almost 3 weeks to finish it, and I’m simply amazed at the finished product. He worked so hard on it. I’m absolutely thrilled with it.
Hi globetrotteri,
I want to bring your attention to one of my son’s blogs, poplicks.com, in which he had a mention of your student, Oliver Wang’s story – Haunted Basement. My son’s name is also Oliver Wang, and incidentally, he’s also a writer besides his other roles as a college professor, music critic and an occasional DJ.
What I find very interesting is how the two Oliver Wang’s looks resemble each other at the same age. Of course my son is much older (35 now), but when he was 10-11 years old, he did look like your student, the young Oliver.
I think you and he will find my son’s blog entry on Feb. 26 very interesting. Here it is: http://poplicks.com/
Oliver also has a very popular blog http://www.soul-sides.com. Take a peek at it. By the way, I live in Taipei now too.

The above is another link about my son. It has a snap shot of him. See if you see any resembrance between him and your student.
Hi TW,
Thanks for stopping by. I read your son’s post a few days back. It is eerie. There does seem to be a resemblance. Your son is an excellent writer. I’ve enjoyed reading his blog over the past few days.
